Ceramic Artist
In 2011 in the sweet little surf town of Santa Cruz, California, Lucy Alexander started taking pottery classes under George Dymesich. She began to hone her skills and passion for ceramic art. Eager to expand her time at the wheel, she successfully ran an Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign in 2012 which provided the capital to build a small initial home studio. Moving to Toronto, Canada in 2013 she continued to build her studio and product line, launching Bare Stone pottery in 2015 which is now Lucy Alexander Ceramics. In 2016, she moved her studio back to California to focus on her pottery full time in the beautiful mountain town of Idyllwild. There she owned and operated a successful pottery studio called Mountain Pottery, until her return to Northern California. Lucy, now owner of Mill Valley Pottery Studio in Mill Valley, manages the busy little studio and teaches classes while continuing to make her own ceramic work.
About Lucy’s Work
Lucy makes her work using the pottery wheel and with handbuilt slabs, using local mid-fire clay in small batches in her home studio in Sonoma County. Her work reflects her appreciation for the beauty found in functional handmade objects. She is inspired by the the history of human innovation through technology which has replaced the need for handmade items with factory made objects.
She is fascinated by vintage patent drawings which document historical innovation for complex mechanical objects which are now taken for granted or made obsolete as technology advances. Lucy enjoys bringing these vintage patent drawings to the surface of her handmade ceramic work which she sees as a part of a cultural revolution towards an appreciation for the handmade over factory made.
Lucy’s work is also inspired by historical textiles and loves incorporating textile inspired patterns on the surface of her work through an image transfer process using silkscreen printing.
